Final Exhortation

10/29/17 Colossians 4:2-18

The Walking Dead are real.

No not zombies, but dead men walking are people who are, “…dead in their and sins, in which (they) formerly walked…” (Ephesians 2:1,2). Sometimes it really does feel like we are living in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. A zombie apocalypse would be where we are overrun by people who just limp through life seemingly without the ability to think or live any differently than what has been their accepted way of life to this point – because in reality, they are dead! They are spiritually dead, or in effect, functioning spiritual zombies. Zombieland is a fictional place. The Walking Dead is a fictional hit series. But spiritually dead people walking around actually is a real epidemic, that if properly ‘treated’, could result in a change in the whole climate of our nation.

The good news is, there is a ‘treatment’. The cure for this death, for being a spiritual zombie is being made alive. And that is something only God can do, by His Spirit. This begins when we die to ourselves and only then can we be born again. And we must be born again to see the kingdom of God (John 3:3)

Check out: Ephesians 2:4-6; Colossians 2:13; 1 Peter 3:18 and finally, Romans 6:11-13. Another perspective on this is seen in all of 1 Corinthians chapter 2.

What specific insights do each of these passages bring to this understanding this condition? Do you find anything in these passages you’ve never considered before? What questions are raised for you in these passages? What is our part in all this? What is God’s part?

This spiritual deadness really does explain a lot of attitudes and behavior in our society, doesn’t it?.

What kinds of behavior or attitudes would you attribute to spiritual deadness that are often blamed on other circumstances or reasons?

Changing our nation, one zombie at a time…
