Christ’s Identity, Supremacy, & Ultimatum

Updated: Sep 25, 2017

9/17/17 Colossians 1:13-23

Analogies are limited in their application, I realize, (we often over-do and over think them) and this one is meant to be so limited. Having said that, what would you say is the main purpose of a dog that is a family or an individual’s pet? Primarily, I would say it is to please its owner or master. Some of this terminology may no longer be accepted in some circles but the general principle is still the same. I’ve had five dogs in my lifetime. They’ve had a variety of personalities and their own unique ways of misbehaving at times, but at the end of every day they wanted me to be happy with them. They wanted me to feed them, play with them, pet them, snuggle with them, i.e. make them happy and give them a sense of purpose, if you will. And with the obvious vast differences between dogs and people noted, my dogs are at their happiest when I am pleased with them.

What similarities or differences do you see in comparing dogs and their owners with our relationship with Jesus?

There are three verses from the gospel of John that couldn’t be fit into the sermon but can have application for the idea of Christ giving ultimatums. {John 14:21, 15:8, 21:17} How do each of these verses add weight to the importance of follow through?

Where do you feel you lack follow through most in your walk with Jesus? What are three steps you could take to ensure better follow through toward spiritual growth?

See Hebrews 11:3 and Romans 4:17 to consider what is really being said about Jesus being the Creator and what creation really means. What is significant about this having been written almost 2,000 years ago before the scientific era of explaining all things?

What is the difference between calling God, Creator, and certain humans we know, creative?
